Today people will be returning home from India after a successful and exciting premier of the Indian Grand Prix 2011. Days after the Diwali holiday, a total of 95,000 ecstatic spectators travelled to the Buddh International Circuit, 24km outside of the Delhi, to see the 17th F1 race of the 2011 season. Amid concerns that the track would not be completed in time, spectators and drivers were pleasantly surprised by the smooth running of the event and the jubilant atmosphere. Principle of McLaren Martin Whitmarsh commented that “I think the response from the circuit people here has been great and I believe this will be a successful event because you sense it in Delhi, you sense it in the people, and there is a sporting passion here. We have to work with them to build it up.”
In addition to the positive atmosphere, drivers were also very pleased with the design of the race track itself. The circuit contained very interesting elements including an incline, a right angled turn, long bends and an enormous straight which allowed for the F1 vehicles to reach up to 320km/h. Sebastian Vettel convincingly held his lead throughout the race and even clocked the fastest lap of the race despite encouragement from his team to play it safe. Behind Vettel Jenson button skilfully fought for second place after displays of cunning overtaking and persistent defending. In the 24th Lap, Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa were involved in their sixth collision of the season together, resulting in Massa having to retire from the race early. The Indian owned team, Force India, obtained a place in the top ten drivers with Adrian Sutil coming 9th, furthermore, the only Indian F1 Driver Narain Karthikeyan made an appearance before his homes fans finishing in a modest 15th.
All things considered, the debut Indian race should be considered a success. The move of the F1 enterprise into the India, the country of 1 Billion people, will only bring interesting developments to the sport.
