The Rugby World Cup has come to a climatic and decisive end after The All Blacks narrowly defeated opponents France in Aukland this weekend. If anything, the host team deserves the victory as a means of thanking the country of New Zealand for a spectacular and exciting tournament that was followed by fans from all 20 participating countries. The competition attracted its share of travelers with an expected 100,000 fans making the trip to the south pacific to cheer on their teams. Bernard Lapasset, Chairman of the International Rugby Board, commented that “New Zealand 2011 will be remembered as an exceptional Rugby World Cup. It has been a tournament where New Zealand’s rich culture and heritage has gone hand in hand with Rugby’s tradition and values.”
Yesterday the Rugby World Cup’s tournaments site published what they thought were the Top Five Players of the tournament. It’s impossible to distill to an incredible string of matches, dozens of talented players and an overall exciting competition into a list of 5 athletes… nonetheless the officials make a fair and balanced assessment. The website concluded that Israel Dagg (NZL), Jerome Kaino (NZL), Jamie Roberts (WAL), Sean O’Brien (IRE) and Jacques Burger (NAM) were the top rugby stars to compete in the tournament.

Renault and AT&T Williams announced a long-term chassis-engine partnership in July, paving the way for further Formula 1 successes.
Between 1989 and 1997 the partnership resulted in four Drivers’ and five Constructors’ titles and 63 races won overall.
For the 2012 and 2013 seasons, Renault Sports F1 will be supplying AT&T Williams with its V8 power units. According to the press release, the companies may continue their partnership when Renault introduces its new, energy efficient and turbocharged V6 engines in 2014.
“Of course there’s also a great pride in reviving the Williams-Renault name,” Bernard Rey, Renault Sport F1 President said. “Together we produced racing cars that are recognised for their technical innovation and it is still Renault’s most successful period in F1 to date.”
“We are delighted and excited by our new partnership,” commented Frank Williams, Team Principal of AT&T Williams. “Our previous relationship with Renault was one of the most successful in Williams’ history but we will not allow ourselves to dwell too much on the past. We must look to the future and continue to re-build our on-track reputation, which I am hopeful that today’s announcement will help us to do.”
The FW14 car went down in F1 legend as one of the greatest ever chassis-engine packages, the press release highlighted. The FW14B dominated F1 in 1992, winning 10 of the season’s 16 races.

The Republic of Ireland will look to forge ahead with their Euro 2012 dreams as the boys in green host third-placed Slovakia this Friday, 2 September, at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin.
All eyes will be on whether Giovanni Trappatoni’s men can secure the three points needed to progress on a confident note in advance of meeting Russia four days later.
Captain Robbie Keane has flown in this week from his new base in Los Angeles ahead of the crucial clash and hungry to add to his international goal tally of 52.
Assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland squad Marco Tardelli is upbeat about Ireland’s chances of securing a win ahead of Friday but is mindful of the physicality of the Slovakian team and the potential problems posed by their strong defence.
Tardelli has put Ireland’s chances of qualification on an equal footing with Slovakia with the outcomes of the next two games likely to go a long way towards deciding the Group B winners. He said he is under no illusions about the strength of effort needed to seize the opportunity to progress but that the mental feeling within the squad at the moment is positive.
He says the support of the Irish fans will be crucial to generating a winning atmosphere at Dublin’s Aviva stadium.
With four days in between games the Group B challengers will fly to Moscow for the second game in the double header against Russia on 6 September.
What is the mood in the squad in the build up to Friday’s game against Slovakia? How are the nerves?
The feeling in the team in good. The players trained this morning (Tuesday) and I think we will be very good against Slovakia if we can remain focused and keep our concentration. We can play very well but there is so much pressure and it will be very tough because the Slovakian team is physically strong and I think they are very strong in defence. They scored six goals in their last game and their defence is very tough.
Are there any fitness worries in the squad that might affect the final selection?
No, there are no fitness concerns. This is not a worry. There is just one player at the moment Kevin Kilbane, who has had some problems with his back but I think he can recover for Friday’s game
How hopeful are you that Ireland can progress through the qualifiers to secure a place in Euro 2012?
Their chances are the same as Russia and Slovakia I think. We have grown up during the campaign and there are now been many options in the midfield, defence and with the strikers. We have new young players like Simon Cox and Shane Long working hard in defence. I think it’s possible to get through and I hope for the Irish people we can go to Euro 2012.
What kind of a position are we in to face group favourites Russia on 6 September?
At the moment I will stay thinking about Slovakia because it is a match that is very important before we meet Russia. We will have to deal with Slovakia first of all before we look at Russia.
What do you think about captain Robbie Keane’s decision to continue his career at LA Galaxy in California?
I think it is a good thing – it is good for him and good for us because he can play. The distance is very far and the trip is tough but I think when he comes to Ireland today (Tuesday) he will rest first and then be able to play.”
You don’t believe it is a disadvantage to the Irish team that he now based in America?
No I don’t think so because Robbie Keane is very happy to take the position with LA Galaxy and he is happy there with his family so that means it is better for us.
How important is it to have the Irish football fans get behind the team on this campaign?
We need the Irish supporters because they are very important for us. I remember the first time we arrived in Dublin and played for the first time in Croke Park I was touched to feel the support there and to see the fans at the game.
Would you like to continue in your management role as long as possible?
Yes I wish to continue but I do not know what will happen. Football can be very strange but I wish.

THG is proud to have wrapped up its August charity drive to support Share Your Soles. Share your soles is an organization dedicated to providing shoes to those in the third world. Our regional efforts entailed facilitating a shoe drive at our North American Headquarters at Chicago’s NBC Tower. All together we collected over 200 pairs of shoes.
Since 1999 Share Your Soles has delivered tens of thousands of pairs of shoes to desperately impoverished people throughout the world. Share Your Soles began when founder Mona Purdy traveled through Central America, and saw children painting tar on the soles of their bare feet, due to lack of shoes, in order to prevent disease. Share your soles is a nongovernmental organization with no ties to other aid organizations, they are truly only in existence to make life a little easier for those that they serve.
“Share Your Soles is a worthy organization I have watched grow over the last several years. It has strong backing from companies ranging from American Airlines to FedEx, with a select group of board members including our Secretary of State Jesse White. With the contribution power of close to 200 employees in our Chicago office, there was no question we would want to support an Illinois based charity with a global reach .” said Jon Stromberg, CEO of THG Sports North America.

Ipswich Town will play its Championship opener of the 2011/12 season this Saturday (6 August).
ITFC will meet Bristol City at Ashton Gate followed by the Carling Cup tie with Northampton at Portman Road next Tuesday.
Manager Paul Jewell expects a tough season ahead following the opening game on 6 August.
“It just proves what a tough league this is. I know it’s a cliché but every manager in this league will tell you that every game in this division is tough,” he told the ITFC website.
ITFC has recently signed Aaron Cresswell on a three-year contract after arriving as a free agent from Tranmere. Cresswell joins earlier signings Nathan Ellington, Lee Bowyer and Michael Chopra, who were signed earlier in the summer.
Striker Ellington put pen to paper on a two-year deal in a move that sees him reunited with Town boss Paul Jewell for a third time.
England international Bowyer, who joined the club as a free agent, signed a one-year contract. Bowyer has clocked up almost 600 appearances in first-team football, spending most of his career in the Premier League. He started his playing days at Charlton, before going on to play for Leeds, Newcastle, West Ham and Birmingham, helping the midlanders to Carling Cup success over Arsenal at Wembley last season.
Chopra came to Portman Road from Cardiff for an undisclosed fee on a three year contract. The 27-year-old said he is confident he can end the club’s seven-year wait for a 20-goal striker.
Shefki Kuqi was the last player to score 20 goals in the 2004/05 season.
